The benefits of HEET in your community

Economic

Energy efficiency is a positive way to enhance the economy of small towns by returning energy dollars to the community for other use. The retrofit of 2,148 homes through Project 2BH has resulted in an estimated energy savings of up to 12,315, 200 kWhs per year.  At 18c/kWh this results in nearly $2,142,000 in saved “energy dollars” each year - $2,142,00 that is then available for householders to spend otherwise, further stimulating the economy.

Health

Evidence shows that cold, damp housing is a major contributor to the incidence of chronic respiratory disease.  Such health impacts not only detrimentally affect the well being of these families, they create a financial drain on already limited resources.  We have documented significant health improvements for occupants with chronic respiratory illness after a energy efficiency retrofit has been carried out.  A recent study by the Wellington School of Medicine quantified the annual health savings from full home retrofits at approximately $210 per annum per household.  Considering HEET has retrofitted 2,148 homes, home occupants are saving over $451,000 per annum in health costs.

Social

Through Project 2BH, HEET have been able to offer training and employment to over 20 people, some of whom were previously long term unemployed.  Through the creation of these job opportunities, we have brought money back into the economy of the community and increased individual self esteem, while creating role models for others.

Environmental Benefits

The cumulative kWhs saved through the installation of energy efficiency measures effectively displaces electrical generation required nationally and equates to a savings of 38,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Through this decreased reliance on generation, this project contributes towards a reduction in New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels, thus resulting in better air quality and a reduction of negative environmental impact nationally.

If we invest $2,400 in a house what will be the average savings for an average pre-1977 New Zealand home?

Up to $1000 per year (or $83 a month).  The simple paybacks on energy efficiency measures range from less than a year to about four years – but it's worth it!

These are simply financial benefits and do not take into account the health and wellbeing benefits associated with a warm comfortable home.

Estimated costs are based on an average house of 120 m2.  Costs will vary depending on the unique characteristics of each house.

Energy savings will vary depending on the type, age and location of the house, the number of occupants and the lifestyle they choose to enjoy.  Energy savings are based on a marginal energy cost of 19 cents per kWh for home heating and 10 cents per kWh for water heating.
